How old are you, miss?

When I was teaching, I often got asked how old I was, and instead of answering I would ask them how old they thought I was. This was fun because I enjoyed freaking out students a little bit and because I was always genuinely curious. Also teenagers have NO CLUE how old adults are, so it's hilarious.

In my early years of teaching (when I was about 26-30ish), they generally guessed between 21 and 35 or so. As I got older, they stopped guessing 21 (thank god) and when I was in my early 30s, they typically guessed between 25 and 40.

In the spring of 2021, a class asked me how old I was and I told them to guess. They threw out lots of guesses ranging from mid-20s to early 40s. I was 33 at the time, so pretty much normal and to be expected.

The last guess that we'd heard in a flurry of guesses was 45, and a couple of kids were offended on my behalf and yelled at J, who had guessed it.

Me: "Oh, wait, hang on! You guys have only ever seen me with a mask on. Let me take my face mask off so you can see my whole face, and then maybe you can guess better."

So I take my face mask off and everyone is staring at me VERY intently.

J, without missing a beat: "Oh! 55!"

I absolutely lost my shit. I was literally bent double at the front of the room because I was laughing so hard. I have never heard a more perfect example of comedic timing in my life. The room was completely silent and J saw an opportunity and he took it and damn, did it pay off.

Half of the class was losing their shit laughing with me. Half of the class was screaming at J for being rude. I might have literally laughed until I cried, it was just so fucking funny.

Amazing joke, J, absolutely fucking nailed it.
