Borrowing money
I had to call my mom one day, which I did in front of L, on speaker.
Me: "Hey, I need to ask a favor."
Mom: "Sure, what's up?"
Me: "Well, I forgot that my mortgage payment was hitting my account today, and I don't have the money in the right place. I moved too much to my savings account, which is at a different bank so it's going to take 3 days to process the transfer."
Mom: "Oops. Hate when that happens."
Me: "Yep, exactly. So the problem is that I am currently overdrawn, and I don't want to spend a few days getting hit with $35 charges. Can I borrow $100 from you? I can pay you back in a couple of days when my bank finishes processing the transfer."
Mom: "Sure, no problem. Want me to write a check?"
Me: "Actually, could you just send it electronically? [We use the same bank so it would process instantly.] Because the account is at negative $20 or so right now."
Mom: "Oh, yes, I can do that."
She sent me the money and we got off the phone.
I turned to look at L, who is just standing a few feet away from me, staring at me in absolute shock.
L: "Is that...is that how normal people can talk about money?"
Me: "Yes."
L: "Like...she didn't argue with you and make you tell her what you spend your money on, and you didn't have to guilt trip her and say 'well I'm your daughter so you have to give me money,' and she didn't make you give her any promises about paying her back..."
Me: "Yes."
L: "You just...asked for it...and she gave it to you..."
Me: "Yes. And in a couple of days, when the bank finishes processing the transfer, I will give it back. To be fair, my family is VERY good about money. We're probably not really all that normal. But I think it's good for you to see what it can look like."
I think her mind might still be boggled, 4 years later.
